Origins and organisation
The Light House Christian Care Ministry was founded as a charity (no. 1064132) in 1986 and is based in Coventry in the West Midlands. We have a full time Counsellor/Manager and 4 part-time staff counsellors, 3 part-time administrative staff and about 25 (variable!) volunteer counsellors. 4 Trustees provide the management oversight.
The volunteer counsellors are either fully qualified and on the Counsellor Register administered by the Professional Bodies, or they are Student Counsellors working on placement as part of the final stages of their training. All counsellors, whether qualified or in training, receive formal clinical supervision, which helps ensure the quality of our service and acts as further training for all personnel.
We are a Christian-based registered charity which provides a general counselling service to the whole community irrespective of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, belief and social background. We offer counselling in all areas of need including: depression, anxiety, sexual problems (including abuse victims), eating disorders, problems with anger, bereavement, terminal illness and all types of relationship difficulties. We receive requests to provide counselling assistance from increasing numbers of people every year from Coventry and surrounding areas. Many of the referrals come from GPs, health advisory lines, churches and voluntary organisations such as Samaritans. Others are recommended to come by family or friends, many of whom have used the service themselves.
The overall cost of providing a counselling session is around £30, and clients are invited to make a donation towards the cost of their counselling, with a suggested minimum donation of £20. We are aware that many of our clients come from the more deprived areas of Coventry, and increasingly we are seeing clients who do not have a regular income, but no one is refused counselling because of an inability to pay. In order to support our work beyond client donations, additional Light House funding comes from a number of sources including Grant Making Trusts, individual gifts, and church gifts. We also have some funding through the local NHS CCG. We encourage individual gifts & client donations to be given through the Gift Aid scheme where possible.
